Now let’s look at what science says about Lactobacillus rhamnosus:
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Boosts Your Immunity
An interesting study carried out on a group of healthy middle-aged men and women found that drinking low-fat milk or lactose-free milk mixed with Lactobacillus rhamnosus for 3 weeks resulted in 15% to 17% increase in leukocytes (immune cells). Their tumor cell killing ability increased by 71% in the group that drank full-fat milk with L. rhamnosus and 147% in the group that drank the lactose-free mixture. It’s pretty impressive, isn’t it? The effect declined steadily after the participants stopped consuming the Lactobacillus rhamnosus but remained at the above average level.
Another study looked at how goat’s fermented milk with Lactobacillus rhamnosus can affect immunocompromised and malnourished mice. They found that this probiotic strains accelerated their recovery and cut their risk of developing respiratory and intestinal infections.
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Supports Vaginal Health
A 2003 study found that 37% of women who took Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus fermentum orally for 60 days fully recovered from asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis. After 28 days of treatment, researchers found a significant increase in Lactobacillus strains and a decrease in vaginal yeast that could cause a yeast infection. These probiotic strains have the ability to create hostile conditions for yeast and they’ve been shown to kill Candida cells.
The researchers concluded that taking Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus fermentum is a safe way to decrease the risk of developing bacterial vaginosis and vaginal yeast infections. However, it’s worth noting that Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG strain is not as good as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 when it comes to supporting vaginal health. #
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Helps Prevent Diarrhea and Relieve other Digestive Issues
A 2011 research based on a collection of different studies found that taking Lactobacillus rhamnosus significantly decreased pain and pain frequency in children suffering from IBS and other pain causing gastrointestinal issues.
Another study found that consuming Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG can relieve the symptoms of Traveler’s diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and recurring Clostridium difficile colitis after 3 to 7 days of treatment. It also improves diarrhea in children making its duration shorter and less severe.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus improves the immunity of our gastrointestinal tracts, making us less prone to different types of infections and helping treat the infections faster and more effectively.
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus can Improve Dental Health in Children
In a 2001 study was done on a group of almost 600 children aged 1 to 6. They divided them into two groups, one was given milk with Lactobacillus rhamnosus, the other one was given milk on its own 5 days a week for 7 months.
The group that took Lactobacillus milk had significantly lower levels of mutans streptococcus levels (the bacteria that causes dental caries) and fewer dental caries. This effect was especially visible in the 3 to 4 age group.
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Helps Women Lose Weight
A study carried out on a group of obese men and women shows that women are especially susceptible to Lactobacillus rhamnosus when it comes to weight loss. After 12 weeks women that were taking Lactobacillus rhamnosus supplement lost significantly more weight than women who were taking a placebo. After the initial 12 weeks, the women who kept taking Lactobacillus rhamnosus for another 12 weeks as maintenance treatment, kept losing weight, as opposed to the placebo group who started putting on weight again.
The interesting bit is that this effect was only observed in women. The reason why Lactobacillus rhamnosus doesn’t support weight loss in men is unknown. But it’s still interesting to know that probiotics can help us lose weight!
Are Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Products Safe?
Health supplements containing probiotics are considered safe in healthy people. However, in very rare cases probiotic supplements may cause bacteremia and sepsis, a blood infection. One study found only two cases of Lactobacillus blood infection that was caused by the same probiotic strain that was found in the probiotic supplement used by patients. Another study, however, found that although Lactobacillus blood infections do occur, they’re mostly caused by strains that already reside in people’s bodies.
So taking probiotics is generally considered safe and the risk of them causing a serious blood infection is extremely low. It’s much more probable to experience digestive issues such as bloating or diarrhea when you start taking probiotics. These side effects should ease once your body gets accustomed to the daily doses of probiotics.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus offers an array of benefits to our health and definitely worth to incorporate it in our diet. However, it’s worth knowing that probiotic supplements that contain different probiotic strains are better for our health than those that contain a single strain. So it’s best to pick a probiotic supplement that contains at least a few different strains apart from Lactobacillus rhamnosus.
For women who want to use Lactobacillus rhamnosus to improve their vaginal health, probiotic suppositories that contain this strain will be the most effective. You can also try a probiotic supplement formulated especially for women to support their vaginal health and help them prevent and treat vaginal yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis.
