If you’re not sure if it’s a yeast infection, visit a urologist to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. If your partner’s got a vaginal yeast infection and you notice the above symptoms, most probably it’s candidal balanitis and you can choose one of these over-the-counter treatments to cure it:

  • apply an antifungal cream such as Miconazole  twice a day in the morning and in the evening, for 7 days

  • If you need a relief from itching while waiting to get your medication, apply coconut oil on the affected skin. Coconut oil is a very powerful natural anti-fungal agent.

If you add a drop or two of tea tree oil, the antifungal effect of coconut oil will be even stronger, but you may get a burning sensation on your penis. Check my article about natural cures for yeast infections to learn more.

Why did I get a male yeast infection?

The first explanation that comes to mind is that you got it from your partner. Some pathogenic Candida cells attached to your penis during an intercourse and started to colonize it.

Make sure that you use a condom whenever your partner gets a yeast infection, and apply Clotrimazole cream even if you don’t get any symptoms, just as a preventative measure.

Interestingly, yeast infection is not considered a sexually transmitted disease and there’s evidence that male partners are not the main risk factor in women who suffer from recurrent vaginal yeast infection.

Another reason for getting male yeast infections can be diabetes. Make sure you get your glucose tolerance tested to eliminate this possibility, especially if you’re over 40.

Conclusion

If you keep getting penile yeast infections, make sure you go to see your urologist (or your partner’s gynecologist) to determine the cause and nature of your infection and find a more effective treatment, because not all genital yeast infections respond to over-the-counter medication.

It’s really important to get assessed by a doctor as there are certain sexually transmitted diseases, such as genital warts, that can give similar symptoms to male yeast infection.

Those conditions can cause serious complications for you and your partner’s health and it’s really important to treat them properly.

If you cannot see your doctor, it’s a good idea to order an STD test kit online for yourself and your partner to check for any sexually transmitted diseases and treat them as soon as possible.

If you and your partner are trying to conceive it’s worth knowing that Candida, the fungus that causes a yeast infection, has the ability to cause sperm immobilization, which means that when you’re suffering from genital yeast infections your chances of conceiving drop. • Thank you for putting together this article. I have had several male yeast infections over the past 6 years. diflucan gets rid of it quick and painlessly over 48 hours but I worry about my bacterial health so I have also cured it using oregano oil diluted with coconut oil, and then probiotic rich non sugar yogurt a couple hours later, applied at least twice daily for five days. This home made method seems to make the symptoms vanish. if your female partner gets recurring vaginal yeast infections I suggest the Femdophilus oral probiotic for regular preventative healthy care.

    • Thank you for your tips Pat. Using coconut oil with oregano oil is a great natural way to treat a yeast infection. I still haven´t written an article about oregano oil and its antifungal properties but I´ll do it soon. All the best!

  • I didn’t even know that men could get yeast infections. Sounds very very unpleasant from what I’m reading here.

Is the Diflucan a prescription drug? I’m assuming that we should also go to a doctor for this?

Thanks for sharing this, and I hope I never have to refer to it for myself.

    • Hi Ian, Yeast infection can also happen to men and in rare cases, if they spread to inside the penis, they can cause temporary fertility issues. You don’t need to get a prescription for Diflucan, but still it’s best to get checked by a doctor if you get any worrying symptoms, to get an accurate diagnosis.

  • Hi, this is nice, informative article. Yeast infection isn’t a really nice thing and this is probably the first article about male yeast infection I’ve ever seen. I’ve usually seen articles only about women yeast infections, but obviously, men can get it as well.

The problem is that people eat too much sugar and it’s main food for any yeast infections…so as you said people with diabetes more likely get the infection…

Coconut oil is really good for this… Also, it’s good to eat the coconut oil because it contains Caprylic acid which helps fight the yeast infection..And reduce sugar! 😉

    Thank you for sharing!

    • Thanks for your comment Iveta. Interestingly, it seems that vaginal yeast infections are not triggered by eating sugar, as long as you don’t have glucose tolerance problems. In one study researchers checked sugar levels in women’s vaginas before and after drinking a glucose drink and there was no change at all! You can read more about it in my article about the link between eating sugar and vaginal yeast infections.

  • I didn’t know that men could get yeast infection but I guess it makes sense that they could get it from their partners if they don’t use a condom during sex.
It’s interesting that men can get yeast infection if they have diabetes. I have pre-diabetes and perhaps my yeast recurrent yeast infection is linked to that? That’s not an angle I have considered.

Thanks for sharing this informative article. I am sure people will be more aware of the problem and benefit from this knowledge that you provide.
