There are many other treatments you can choose from as well as some lifestyle changes you could make to speed up your recovery and prevent future bouts of yeast infections. I’ll discuss all of them below.

First of All, The Itch Down There May Not Be a Yeast Infection

Yeast infection symptoms can be easily confused with BV or an STD such as trichomoniasis. Each of these infections requires a different treatment and some can lead to severe health complications if left untreated. One of the most convenient ways to get tested is to use online lab testing.

MyLabBox will send you a test kit. The test kit comes with instructions and it’s very easy to use. You’ll be able to take your swabs in the comfort of your home within minutes. Once you send your swabs back you’ll have to wait for about 3-5 days to get your results by email. If you test positive, you’ll get a free medical consultation to help you find the right treatment. Go ahead and order your vaginal health test kit today.

What can I do to prevent yeast infections?

Apart from following a treatment to get rid of a yeast infection, try to follow my tips to make sure you recover swiftly and keep yeast at bay to prevent future infections:

  • Don’t take antibiotics when it’s not necessary. They kill friendly bacteria which boost your defenses against pathogenic yeast. If you have to follow antibiotic treatment, make sure you take probiotic supplements during and at least two weeks after your treatment.

  • Keep your cortisol level low. Heightened cortisol level can significantly lower your immunity and make you more prone to infections. To maintain a healthy amount of cortisol in your blood do the following: get enough sleep, avoid situations leading to chronic stress and cut down your caffeine intake.

  • Keep your vaginal area dry and ventilated. In order to achieve this you can: sleep naked, wear 100% cotton or silk underwear and loose fitting trousers and skirts (preferably made of cotton or silk), get changed straight after exercise or a swimming session.

  • Any type of injury to the vulva or vaginal tissue can provide an opportunity for Candida to start an infection, so make sure you practice safe sex and try not to have sex more than seven times a week to avoid micro-injuries.

  • Avoid steroid medications because they tend to trigger yeast infections. If you have to follow a steroid treatment ask your doctor to prescribe oral antifungal medication as a preventative measure.

  • If you suffer from diabetes, cut down on sugar because increased glucose levels in your blood are a great source of food for Candida.

  • Choose ozone or UV-sanitize swimming pools instead of chemically treated ones. The chemicals in conventional swimming pools can change the pH in your vagina making you more vulnerable to infection.

  • Avoid vaginal douches as they can upset your vaginal flora leading to low levels of friendly bacteria that protect you from vaginal infections.

  • Hello am suffering from a recurring yeast infection for around 7 years and have not yet found any suitable medication am having it every month after treatment

    • Hi Laura, it´s very frustrating when yeast infection treatment doesn´t work. Sometimes it happens because women self-diagnose and their otc treatment is not meant for the type of infection they have. Getting properly diagnosed by a doctor is the key. When yeast infection treatment doesn’t work it may also be because the yeast infection you suffer from was caused by a Candida strain resistant to conventional treatment. In this case it’s really worth to try boric acid suppositories. They’re very effective against different Candida strains, and also BV. Good luck!

    • Have you tried eating cool whip this helped my obgyn told me about it and it worked

  • Hi, I was struggling to get rid of my yeast infection for weeks, it was coming and going. Now I found your article about ginger and I am using the ginger tea tampons you recommended, so far so good! After two days I don’t feel any itching anymore, I’ll keep inserting them for a few more days and hopefully the infection will be gone. Thank you so much!

  • Hello, can I use boric acid suppositories when I’m on my period?

    • Hi Fran, you shouldn’t use ay vaginal suppositories during your period. You could use probiotic tampons to relieve your symptoms and reestablish a healthy vaginal pH and you can start using suppositories straight after your period. Good luck!
