Is Vagisil Good for Yeast Infections?

If you’re looking for over-the-counter medication for vaginal yeast infection, Vagisil can provide a quick solution for the itching skin around your vulva. But is Vagisil good for yeast infections?  Unfortunately, the answer is no, it won’t help you get rid of a yeast infection for good.

In this article, I’ll tell you why it’s not a good yeast infection treatment and what over the counter medications and natural remedies work best.

So What is Vagisil?

Vagisil cream contains benzocaine and resorcinol, numbing compounds which block nerve signals in your body.

It’s very effective in reducing discomfort caused by vaginal yeast infection, but as I said before, it won’t cure a vaginal yeast infection.

What I don’t like about Vagisil, is that it contains some potentially irritating and toxic ingredients, which should be avoided during a vaginal yeast infection. Have a look at the ingredient list:

Benzocaine (5%), Resorcinol (2%), Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Mineral Oil, Isopropyl Palmitate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Corn Oil, Cholecalciferol, Lanolin Alcohol, Fragrance, Methylparaben, Carbomer, Isopropyl Myristate, Isopropyl Stearate, Sodium Sulfite, Triethanolamine, Trisodium HEDTA, Maltodextrin.

As you can see, it contains alcohol which can irritate and disrupt the bacterial flora around your vagina.

Maltodextrin is an artificial sugar, it provides food to yeast cells and enables them to thrive. It also contains parabens, potentially carcinogenic compound.

So what should I choose instead of Vagisil?

If you want to get rid of a vaginal yeast infection for good, you’ll be much better off using antifungal suppositories and creams or natural remedies, such as aloe vera, coconut oil or boric acid suppositories.

Using Antifungal Creams and Suppositories for a Vaginal Yeast Infection

Antifungal suppositories and creams contain such antifungal compounds as Clotrimazole, Miconazole or Tioconazole.

All of them have been shown to have a strong effect against different Candida species and they usually work within a few days. The most popular antifungal cream is Monistat.

It contains 7 prefilled applicators that will help you insert the cream into the vagina for seven consecutive nights and external cream to help relieve the itching.

The cream contains Miconazole, a strong antifungal compound, and it will help you get rid of a vaginal yeast infection within a few days.

You should experience a great relief after the first night of use.

Using Natural Remedies for a Vaginal Yeast Infection

If you use antifungal creams and suppositories, you cannot avoid contact with potentially irritating and toxic compounds used to preserve them or improve texture.

If you prefer an all natural remedy for a yeast infection, you can choose from a variety of options, such as coconut oil, tea tree oil or aloe vera.

My personal favorite is aloe vera. It’s got scientifically proven antifungal qualities and gives immediate effects.

You can make aloe vera suppositories using aloe vera gel with only natural ingredients, such as Aubrey Organics Pure Aloe Vera Gel.

If you want to make your aloe vera suppositories, follow these easy steps:

  • Use an ice cube tray, with small and round cavities

  • Mix 1 ounce of aloe gel with 8 ounces of coconut oil in a bowl (you can add a few drops of tea tree oil if you’re not allergic to it)

  • Pour the mixture into the tray and leave it in the freezer

  • Once solid, insert one suppository overnight

  • Don’t forget to use a pad, as it may leak!

In the meantime, you can apply some aloe vera gel on your vulva for instant relief from itching. If you’ve got access to fresh aloe vera, use the pulp from its leaves instead of aloe vera gel.

Conclusion

So if you’re asking yourself: “Is Vagisil good for yeast infections?”, the answer is no. Although Vagisil cream can help you relieve vaginal yeast infection symptoms, it won’t make it go away. Make sure you use over the counter antifungal medication or natural remedies to get rid of it for good.

  • I have been fighting this yeast/vaginal/UTI for a long time now and am on my third antibiotic which makes me nervous since I just went through a bout of C-Diff that hospitalized me for 4 days. I am one of those that don’t have a lot of faith in the medical community, for very good reason. Yet again, another example. I was told by my doctor that Vagisil was same as Monistat even though the itching wasn’t getting any better! Will be running out to get some Monistat today. Usually would be the type to opt for the natural product but want to get rid of this quickly and even though I’m a self professed “natural gal” there must be some doubts floating around in the back of my mind? I’ll use the aloe after a couple weeks of Monistat. Once I get rid of whatever this is, any advice how to keep it away? I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer in January of 2016 and although it is gone – after extensive surgery and chemo – I have had many UTI’s that I can’t seem to totally get rid of and ENOUGH of the antibiotics! Thanks for your research – get tired of doing it on my own which is how I found you!

    • Hi Cathy, thank you for commenting. If you prefer to treat your yeast infection naturally, the most potent natural remedy is boric acid. Boric acid suppositories are very effective against yeast infections caused by Candida strains that are immune to conventional treatments and well as BV. After you finish your treatment, you can keep using the suppositories once a week to prevent yeast infection from coming back. It’s definitely worth trying. To prevent UTI’s you may want to try taking probiotic supplements designed especially for women to support your vaginal and urinary health. Probiotics will colonize your urinary tract and boost your defenses against pathogenic bacteria that cause your infections, they’ll also colonize your vagina and make you more immune to yeast infections. I wish you all the best!

  • Thanks for the info, I didn’t realize Vagisil couldn’t really cure a yeast infection. I’ll go for Monistat instead and hopefully I’ll see quick results, fingers crossed!
