Where to Buy a Yogurt Starter Culture?

A yogurt starter culture contains a blend of friendly bacteria which converts the milk lactose into lactic acid. Lactic acid is what gives yogurt that tangy, slightly acidic taste.

It also lowers the milk pH changing its texture, so it’s much denser than milk on its own and can be stored for longer periods of time.

Yogurt starters differ in terms of the blend of bacteria they use and each blend produces a slightly different taste. So it’s worth to experiment with different yogurt cultures to find your favorite taste.

Do I need a Yogurt Maker to Make Yogurt?

A yogurt maker is very convenient if you want to make yogurt often. It allows you to heat the milk to the exact temperature set in the instructions and cool it down when necessary. Yogurt machines have got timers which will further help you make your perfect yogurt with the texture and taste you expect.

However, it’s possible to make yogurt without using a yogurt maker but you’ll need to find a way to heat milk without overheating it and you’ll need to be more careful and involved in the whole process of yogurt making.

What are the Health Benefits of Eating Yogurt?

  • It’s a rich source of many nutrients, such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and B vitamins.

  • It’s high in protein, about 12g of protein for 200g of yogurt.

  • It contains beneficial bacteria, each bacteria stain plays a different role in our body, but many have been proven to promote digestive health and boost immunity. Probiotics can protect you from infections, such as common cold, yeast infections, and bacterial infections.

  • It promotes your cardiovascular health by boosting the levels of “good” cholesterol in your blood.

  • A 2012 study found that eating full-fat dairy products, such as yogurt, is associated with lower body weight, so it may help those trying to lose weight.

Who Shouldn’t Eat Yogurt?

Yogurt is considered safe and beneficial to your health, however, some people should avoid it whenever possible:

People with lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance means that you don’t produce the enzyme needed to break down lactose, called lactase.

As a result, when you consume lactose-containing dairy products, you may experience digestive issues such as diarrhea or bloating.

However, during the production of yogurt, some of the lactose is broken down and probiotics may further boost your digestion.

So it’s best for you to try a particular yogurt and see how your body reacts, instead of ditching it completely.

If you’ve got milk allergy you should avoid milk-containing products at all costs. If you ingest a dairy product such as yogurt, you may suffer from a mild allergic reaction, but sometimes your reaction may be very severe and life-threatening in which case you should seek medical help immediately.

Conclusion

Making your own yogurt at home allows you to decide what kind of milk you want to use and what probiotic strains will be in your yogurt. It’s very satisfying to be able to share your own homemade yogurt with your family knowing exactly what it took to make it.

Starter cultures is our future, because you know what you put into your own yogurt!

    • Hi Jeff, I’ve just checked Vivo website and I like the fact that they have different kinds of yogurt starter cultures to choose from. There’s even one especially designed for kids! Using yogurt starter cultures is much healthier and economical than buying yogurt in stores. Especially the heirloom varieties which can be reused multiple times, they’re my favorite!
